I believe this may be of interest to users building specialist multi media systems.

Some time ago I searched around for ways to reduce the size of Windows 2003 .net server and also Windows 2000 Professional.
My challenge was to make Windows 2003 .net Server (standard edition) install and run on a 512MB compact flash card for a NAS system.
My challenge for Windows 2000 Professional was to make it run on a 1GB virtual disk (including a 256MB page file) for my virtual server.

I managed to do both by using nLiteOS from http://www.nliteos.com (The only warning I can give is that it takes a lot of practice)

Here is a screen capture of the Windows 2003 .net Server test install:

I'm already using nLite after SP2 for XP appeared last year. I have mixed results, but no major problems. I never remove many components, only those I never use on Windows like Internet Games, Frontpage or Movie Maker.

Latest version of nLite have very nice features like direct integrating updates, support for addons or disabling or enabling Windows Files Protection (one of the most problematic features of Windows XP in my opinion).

nLite is one of the best freeware tools ever.

Yeah it's definately one of the best tools I have ever seen on the internet, it saved me a fortune on my NAS system and saved me a lot of disk space for my virtual servers.

I think maybe Microsoft will take an interest in some way one day, I hope that if they do take any notice of it it will be on a positive note rather than to sue anyone.

When I did the final cut down for the NAS system itself I cut it back further than the test capture shows, I more or less cut everything away as follows:

Original CD was .net server standard edition (SP1 integrated), nLite was V1 Beta 5.

Drivers down to just Intel IDE, Floppy support, COM and LPT, Graphics card support for old and new cards and also Ethernet (Everything else removed).
Languages down to just English (UK).
Applications down to almost nothing, removed Games, Media , IE + core, WMP + core, system tools and windows update.
I had to keep Active directory support, DTC and the Jet DB, system logs and Administrative templates, I also kept the remote desktop because I couldnt get NetOp to install.

On the installation it did throw a few errors about disk space becoming low but still continued to install, after install the system did throw an error for a service, I immediately changed the page file to none when the system booted to the desktop, after restarting and after the nLite post install commands had run the system ran perfectly without a service error.
One thing that did puzzle me though was that "netplwiz.dll" was missing (I use it for managing users via "rundll32 netplwiz.dll, UsersRunDll" ; case sensitive), I copied it over on a floppy disk, when launching it gave an error about the template being missing, but still functioned.

The only external application installed on the system is Diskeeper.

Windows 2000 professional:

Original CD was 2000 professional (SP4 integrated), nLite was V1 Beta 5.

I did a similar cut down to the 4 windows 2000 professional systems on my virtual server, but added mozilla firefox, eMule and couldnt remove the page file (page file 192-384MB), hence they run on 1GB.
