The main site is going through some behind the scenes changes. Links and text will be clearer, with a slightly simpler page appearance.
Some links will be dead while work is ongoing.

Gradually I hope to include some popular command line encoders for high end users.

Hi there!

I've always been using your sites Bitrate Calculator, it was available on this url:
http://www.cole2k.net/?display=Calc

It has always given me very exact predictions (even for non divx codecs) which bitrate I should use. Strangely I cant replicate those predictions with manual calculation.

Will the site be coming back? Or maybe you could give me an insight what your calculatior did exactly (equation)? I regret that i've never checked the source code, and now its too late... :/

Thank you very much.

Hi Deathcrow,
I didn't think anyone was using it, so I removed it.
I'll put the page back on the site after I've edited it to match the others.

Just a quick follow up to let you know that the bitrate caulator is back on the site.

Wow, thats great! Thank you!

I've now had a look at the code... Could you give a hint to the uninitiated as to why you need to use 1048 bit conversion for the Divx5/x264 calculations? I mean, obviously its correct because its giving me the correct results, but i never knew that. Is this some kind of standard that i didn't know about? Does it depend on the container format? *curious*

Maybe you have a website that could enlighten me?

Nontheless, thanks again for your quick response! *happy again*

Hi again Deathcrow,
The equasion is to be honest a very near rounded up guess, I originally came up with 1052, but that was too high.
The issue with codecs is that they don't always use a uniform measure of kilobytes or megabytes eg:
1x1024bytes should equal 1kb, but some codecs use 1x1000bytes.
Modern codecs usually work backwards from mb, so the kilobyte rate should be 1/1024, but is often measured as 1/1000, this means that bitrates like 1.5mb would simply become 1500000bytes rather than 1.5x1024x1024bytes.
So, to sum it up, the modern codec calculation makes up for missing bytes.
I know that probably makes little sense, but it was a short way to calculate to a close figure.
