System rolled back...

1. Cole2k as standalone codec with no FFD settings change:
a) MP4 - it works with good image quality - Fixed
b) Xvid, DivX, AC3 supported
c) H264 - it works without need to enable it in FFD setting
- image quality in original window size and half size is good, in fullscreen choppy again
d) VobSub 2.33 - computer freezes as in previous version
e) VobSub 2.37 - Xvid video with subtitles is not playing althought computer is working. It seems like video is always paused.

2. Additional codecs:
- DivX 5.2.1 - errors with h264 format corrected
- Xvid 1.1.2 - it may cause some errors with AC3 sound - still testing
- K-lite 2.8.1.b - no errors in registries reported, errors with VobSub and subtitled videos fixed (for both versions)

3. Installation and uninstallation
- no new errors to report
- regsrvr32 errors fixed

4. h264 setting - libavcodec enabled in FFD
- Errors with h264 video fixed without DivX 5.2.1 present, i need some tests to be done but, I recommend to enable it by default

WMV files:
apparently cole2k does not support them, even when i enable libavcodec.

VobSub 2.37 and FFD errors with subtitled videos:

DivX coded videos
when using DivX encoded video with subtitles this app crash may appear:

(mdvdp 1.1 player on start of video - error disappeared)

the behaviour of this error is changing. It appears that it is dependand on player which is used, but also always is included VSfiler.dll

XVID coded videos
when i am using Xvid video with subtitles no image an sound is played and it seems that player is paused - black screen in player window, no sound, no CD/disc activity, but computer is not frozen as before - player can be closed with no errors.

Also when using subtitled video and cd rom lose its track computer may freeze, and there is one minor bug that if i close the player or video icons in right down corner does not disappear, they vanish after i put mouse cursor over them.

I've been having a similar problem with the test system.
The error given on mine says that not all streams could be decoded, it could possibly be a language barrier of Windows 98 (Lack of unicode support), as the filters work perfectly on Windows 2000 and XP.

ffdshow is not enabled by default for h.264 and x264 because although it is better it is less compatible.

also i tried Windows Media Player 9 (for it is standard part of windows XP)

i found that this player has much to do with wmv codecs and it is improving wmv play quality greatly, but...

there are some trouble with xvids and ac3 sound... sometimes is sound not available, or attempt to play a ac3 file leads to system crash... I thought it is caused by Windows media player but for now i really dont know the reason...

Also i installed Media Player Classic.

This player is able to play all subtitled movies with cole2k 6.0.9, but i think it is caused by some settings in the player.

In it i enabled "VMR 9 Renderless" direct show video. In the bottom of table is written that this setting are required for loading subtitles.

No other player (MDVDP, WMP9, MPLAYER2) was able to read Xvid with subtitles using VobSub from your pack.

yes i was right. When i set these setting to "system default" Media player lose its ability to read subtitled Xvid videos (same problem - like paused video), after reenabling it gained this ability once again.

there must be used "Video Mixing Renderer 9" instead of default renderer.

AC3:
It's very likely that your system just cannot keep up.
There is a slim possibility that some Dolby Digital EX will cause your system to crash because of the 5.1 channel limit of Windows 98, but I would have expected to see the same problem appear on Windows 2000 in past tests.

VSFilter:
There seems to be a conflict between VSFilter and something else, I've tried VSFilter 2.33 and 2.37 with a variety of un-needed filters removed but wasn't able to isolate the problem.
I also tried Media Player Classic with the same results as you.

ac3:
i have large variety of videos here. One of them is using 5.1 sound, but i have just two repros in front - sound driver is set to output sound for them because if not sound is damaged...

In my opinion it seems as software conflict - sometimes sound works and image is unreadable, sometimes are players able to read these files but lister not, sometimes is video muted. I try to find a reason. If is AC3 used with Xvid it works without errors, also when is cole2k used as standalone codec it has no errors.

(lister - if you are using total commander and you need to view file you press f3 and it uses lister.exe to look at it... it also can read a variety of videos if codecs are available - at this point lister is causing very strange error with avifile.dll - it opens old looking window like from windows 3.11)

Lister is very sensitive because it was not developed for new filters and codecs so it can be used as diagnostic tool for avi, wmv and some old formats (if are codecs allright it works and you can view video instead of text).

Ad Vobsub:
K-lite is maybe changing "default" video renderer directly in system to VMR 9, or maybe it can force to use it any player...

Also i have tested MPC and subtitles only with Xvid i have to try DivX videos and its crashing after closing window...

Is there way how to set VMR 9 as default in FFD or in different config utility?

OMG I GOT IT! its just the settings...

You was right that Vobsub is not foolproof. There are two ways how to fix it
1. VMR 9 (renderless) setting in MPC.

2. Better way is to right click on green arrow and choose "Direct Vobsub (autoload version) set "Vertical Padding" to "original size" in "general" tab, and in "misc" tab enable "apply changes immediatelly".

Then shall most errors dissapear, but it seems there is reboot needed.

(Vertical padding is causing that videos based on yuy2 and yv12 are not playing. it is mentioned in VobSub setting windows, second setting with "apply changes immediately" works on crashes when video si minimalized or closed - this setting was included in K-Lite package)

Add this line to Start>>programs menu>>cole2k
C:\OS\RUNDLL32.EXE vsfilter.dll,DirectVobSub
it could be useful, and also there should be good to import tweaked vobsub settings to system...

At this point i need to do some tests to prove it but for now it seems good.

Thats some good progress, I've been testing it on an mkv and an avi with external subs.
On all files that it loads in there is a crash after closing, on one file it crashed during playback.
I'll continue to test it more and see what else might help.
