Subject: VHS to DVD to edit on a PC?

I am new to this area of techknology so it is new to me but I have copied some VHS tapes while playing them through on a TV which was connected to my DVD recorder using DVD+Rs then I stuck it into my PC expecting it to run but would not.

Am I right in saying that I have to get the appropriate software to do what I am told is, Rip them so that I can then edit the rubbish out?

If that is correct could anyone advise me as to what ripping and editing software is suitable to a new starter with the limited aim of cutting rubbish out and adding sub titles?

Most of the small scale editing packages don't do a very good job of editing.
Another problem is that if you convert to another format for editing you will lose picture quality.
You may wish to look into using a capture card with Adobe Premiere or perhaps something similar.
