I have recently bought a phone that will play video, if I convert to mp4, this is not a problem using nero recode with mpeg files but I would like to be able to transfer from dvd and nero wont do it. Any recomendations for software that will convert dvd to mpeg, preferably free?

The copy protection is what is causing the problem.

You can do it using Slysoft AnyDVD, which removes copy protection from DVD's without needing to copy the files to the drive.

Or you could decrypt the entire DVD to the hard drive using DVDDecrypter and then use the files it produces for Nero Recode.

I was using some footage that I recorded from tv, and I use CSS+Free to sort the copyright stuff anyhow so that shouldn't be the problem, right?

Try a normal pre-recorded DVD with it to see if that works.

PS. Are you using the drive that you had problems with?

Tried a pre-recorded dvd and it worked, will try a home ecorded one again later. Is there any difference between pre-recorded and home recorded content from a stand alone dvd player on a re-writable dvd?

Theres no difference when it comes to the software but there are differences when it comes to the hardware, so your problem is hardware or media related, not software related.

Just another thought...

You may want to look in your home DVD recorders manual to see if there is a finalize disc feature, it may be possible that some home recorders will keep disc sessions open for you to record more video to them, although I wouldn't have expected it to bother a PC.
