| Every time I think I've got the software I need to deal with converting video files so that they can be burnt to dvd I seem to come across yet another. There are so many adverts and so on for software which can convert multiple formats I was hoping members on here could give recommendations as to which are actually worth getting, ideally one piece of software to do everything, and conversely which bits of software to avoid. | |

| I know exactly what you mean, it's like searching for the holy grail.
I have tried repeatedly for years (since I opened this site) and never really got anywhere.
I've found a number of programmers that have produced video conversion packages that are deliberately crippled, whilst at the same time they offer another conversion program under another company name which is crippled in another way.
Quite often you'll find conversion programs that support DivX and don't support XviD, or vise versa.
On the other hand when it comes to audio support you'll find programs that support all audio types except AC3 and DTS, or AAC.
Just to add insult to injury you'll then run accross programs that don't support .ogm or .mkv files.
There are a number of reasons why there doesn't seem to be a program to handle everything:
Video conversion tools are associated with and used for piracy, so it makes sense for developers to assume that if they did produce a useful program it would be pirated and never make any money.
If a developer produced a useful conversion program that did everything we want then the developer would only be able to sell a copy once (people wouldn't need updates very often).
People have no problem with the idea of spending 550 on a home DVD recorder, but would never spend more than 40 for something similar (eg. a recording program) that's on a disc.
Hopefully a few other people may be able to add some input, it would be good to get a list together of well rated programs. | |
