| The problem you're having is usually related to on screen/OSD programs that tell you what is currently playing.
There are plugins like that for people using messengers, IRC clients and also temperature monitoring applications.
"I was going to uninstall Cole2k"
I do a number of very different packages, can I assume that you mean one of the codec packs, if so, read on.
Normally you can uninstall it through add/remove programs, but 64bit versions of Windows break the shortcut.
You can still uninstall it as follows:
On a 32bit Windows version browse to "C:\Windows\system32\C2MP\" and double click uninst.exe.
On a 64bit Windows version browse to "C:\Windows\sysWOW64\C2MP\" and double click uninst.exe.
If you have a 64bit version of Windows you'll be pleased to know that there is a better version of the codec pack under testing right now specifically for 64bit Windows.

| Thanks Cole for your time.
I did what you said and browsed to: C:\Windows\System32\C2MP
But their isn't a uninst.exe file there. I double checked and checked again.
There was more than one C2MP Folder: C2MP which has more files in than the others: C2MP(2), C2MP(3) are these from previous installs of Cole2k and would it be safe to delete them?.
If i could get around this problem without uninstalling the cole2k codecs that would be fine as the Codecs work great for me its just ive been a bit too adventuress and pressed buttons i shouldn't have but i'm not sure what changes i made and can't remember where i made them.
Did you say it might have something to do with Screen\ OSD programs?
Thanks again | |

| Sorted the Problem Cheers Cole you were right i had enabled Osd in some of the codec options.
Just a bit worried about not being able to uninstall the codecs if i need to update them in the future.
Any more ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks again for your time :-)

| Could you tell me where you got the codec pack from?
Mine has only ever been set to use the same folder and will never create extra folders, also as I said previously the only known unstaller problem is caused when installing on a 64bit version of Windows.
I think you have a fake clone of one of my packages.

| Strange. should i be worried ?
I'm not sure where i got it from i thought it was www.Freecodecs.com
but i just had a look on there and i can't seem to find it.
Would i be doing damage to my system if i deleted the lot from the system32 dir
And the registry and re-installed the latest Cole2k Pack

| Some time ago there were a number of re-packaged fake versions of my codec packs on a Russian website and also the eDonkey network.
The packages extracted and installed malware before installing my codec packs.
uninstalling the codec pack would remove all files from my codec pack, but would not remove anything that was added by the package it was compressed in.
There are also a number of so called patches on file sharing networks claiming to be for my packs, but they should also be considered as spyware/malware.
The download links on free-codecs.com are provided by me (mirror.cole2k.net) and are safe.
I would suggest you carry out a scan using Ad-Aware or something similar if you feel that you may have picked something up.

| According to the scan results the drive is clean. I use Adaware, Spy Sweeper
both updated.
Cheers for the tips Cole
Everything seems to be working ok just the fact i can't uninstall the codecs
If i have any problems i'll delete the codecs and clean the registry.
At the end of the day if things go totally wrong i can always do a clean install of windows.

| My codec packs are normally so closely matched that you can over-write one with another, 6.0.8 and 6.0.9 will over-write 6.0.6 and 6.0.7, if you choose to do so I would recommend that you restart first so that no codecs/filters are locked.
Hope that helps. | |
