When I installed the advanced codec package, all the different video formats play (I was looking just for mp4 playback) but the audio output of my Sony XL2 switched from 5.1 to 2 channel. When I uninstalled the package, the optial worked again in 5.1. What am i doing wrong? THanks for your time.

By default the codec packs are set to output over 2 channels until you change the settings.
Also some systems have issues with some of the AC3 decoders.
Heres a suggestion:

Click Start, goto Programs, then Cole2k Media - Codec Pack and select "ffdshow Audio"
Set AC3 in the list to "S/PDIF" and DTS to "S/PDIF" (Click where it says "Disabled" and the drop down list will appear)

Hopefully one will cure the problem for you.
